"Far Away Places" - Swampscott Arts Association

I am currently participating in a group exhibit entitled "Far Away Places," presented by the Swampscott Arts Association and hosted at The Abbot Public Library in Marblehead. The exhibit brings together over 40 artists from several local communities, including Lynn, Swampscott, Salem, Peabody, Marblehead and Nahant. The included pieces are done in a variety of mediums and demonstrate each artist's interpretation of a "Far Away Place".  I am showing one piece in this exhibit, entitled "What They Say", oil, 8"x 10". Some images of my work and of the show as a whole are below:

If you'd like to see the show, it will be up from Friday, January 15th -  Sunday, February 28t, with the opening reception on Sunday, January 17th, from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

Opening Reception - "New Member Exhibit"

2016_blog_10 What a great turn out for this opening on Sunday, January 10 at the Marblehead Arts Association.  The King Hooper Mansion is a beautiful old building that the association is home to, and I am honored to have had the opportunity to show 18 of my paintings.  I look forward to participating in future exhibits and to meeting more of the association's members.  Thank you to all those who came out to support this event.

Pieces of Eight - From Start to Finish

Here is a slide show of the making of  the 8"x 8" oil painting created for the Marblehead Arts Association exhibit, "Hooper's Treasures Pieces of Eight - Fundraiser Exhibit." The Opening Reception is on Sunday, November 22, 2 - 4pm and the show will be up until January 3, 2016. If you'd like to come, the Marblehead Arts Association is located at:

8 Hooper Street Marblehead, MA 01945

This slide show demonstrates the progress of the painting. I have outlined the steps I took below:

[slideshow_deploy id='1888']

Slide 1: The new canvas still wrapped

Slides 2-4: I began by adding a layer of acrylic gesso. After it dried I sanded off the tooth (the rough surface)

Slide 5: I based the painting on a crayon study I had previously done (seen at left). I used this as a reference as I began drawing my plan on the canvas (seen at right).

Slide 6: I added a layer of yellow ochre paint to tone the canvas.

Slides 7-17: This shows the progression of the painting over the course of 4 days using paint, brushes, palette knife and rags to get a textured effect.

Slide 19: The finished painting. It is for sale for $150.

"Swampscott Arts Association: New Member's Show"

This weekend is the opening reception of the Swampscott Arts Association's "New Member's Show." The paintings I will be showing are all of local beaches in Swampscott, including some of the scenes below:

Because ocean scenes are somewhat new to my work, I've been researching new techinques to put the final touches on my paintings. The local library has many great resources.

36th Fort Point Open Studios

IMG_1194 - 2015-10-16 at 12-45-31I had a great time at the 36th Fort Point Open Studios last weekend, Oct 17-18.   I displayed my work in a number of locations during the event. While the majority of my work was set up at 251 A Street,  I was also part of two group shows. These shows were located at the FPAC Gallery on 300 Summer Street and at the Gallery at 249 A Street in the Artist Building. If you were not able to make it out to "Open Studios" here are some images that summarize the weekend.

It was great to have my work up next to so many other talented artists.  While I was at the event I was able to complete another one of my 20 Minute Portraits with a long time supporter of my art. This was number 91- only 9 more to go to reach 100! She was a great model.  Below is an Instagram video of the work that was on display that weekend.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported this event. It was great to see so many of you there!

Fort Point Fall Open Studios

This weekend I will once again be exhibiting my work in the Fort Point for their Fall Open Studios event. I enjoyed the event in the spring and was excited to be asked back for the fall. The work I will be showing this time will focus mainly on my Twenty-Minute Portrait Project. I am currently determining which portraits I will display, as well as other paintings I would like to include.

My work will be displayed at 251 A Street with fellow artists Ian Kennelley and Mark LeSaffe. The event will be held on Friday, October 17th from 4-7pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, the 18-19th, from noon to 5pm. I hope to see some of you there.

I am honored to have been highlighted in a recent blog post by A Street Frames in Cambridge, who discuss my portrait project and inclusion in the open studios event. Please read it here: http://www.astreetframes.com/blog/employee-spotlight-marc-morin

Fort Point - Spring Open Studios

This weekend I am excited to be participating in the Fort Point's Spring Open Studios. Each year, the Fort Point district in South Boston hosts a Fall and Spring Open Studios, which highlights the work of many local artists. Here are some images of the area where my art will be shown:

ArtsWorcester: Art On the Line

2013awsquare2WEB ArtsWorcester, an art association in Worcester, MA, hosts and annual event entitled "Art on the Line," which is an art sale to benefit the association. As a member, I was invited to participate by contributing four small works of art to be sold at the event. A preview of the work that I donated for ArtsWorcester: Art On the Line can be seen in the image above. They are 8"x 8" pieces, done in a mix of watercolor, pen, pencil and acrylic on paper.

The event takes place on Friday, October 4, at the Aurora Gallery in downtown Worcester. Myself, along with other local artists, photographers, and designers, have created and donated 200 8x8" works on paper specifically for this event. The squares will be suspended in ArtsWorcester’s upper gallery, and sold on the spot for $20 each. All proceeds will help keep the gallery exhibits free and open to the public.

The event begins with a preview at 6 PM for "First In Line" ticket holders. "First in Line" tickets are $35 each, and come with first choice of the artworks and a complimentary glass of wine. At 7 PM, the doors will open to the general public for a suggested donation of $5. No artwork will be sold before 6 PM, and the sale ends at 8 PM.

Please see the following link for more details of this event: ArtsWorcester: Art On the Line

Here are more detailed images of the pieces I have contributed: 2013aw1square4WEB

I am looking forward to the event and hope to see some of you there.

"ONE" - ArtsWorcester's Summer Show

Last Friday, June 7th, I attended the opening reception of ArtsWorcester's "One" show, which will be up until July 30th.  It was a wonderful evening to see fellow artists and patrons at this event. I have one painting in the show, titled "Passing." It is a framed, 9"x 12," landscape oil painting. This is one of a series of my paintings of the same size and similar content, that are influenced by Turner and Whistler, two painters whose work I admire. These paintings will be added to the website as they are completed.

2013OneAW "Passing" is located second from the left. Also, a fellow ArtsWorcester member and good friend, Cynthia Woehrle's, painting is 3rd from the left on top.

Here is a close up of "Passing." passing

If you have a chance to stop by the show I would appreciate it. ArtsWorcester is a great local organization for connecting, supporting and cultivating arts in Central Massachusetts. ArtsWorcester's Aurora Gallery, where the show is hanging, is located at:

660 Main Street Worcester, MA 01610

I enjoyed seeing everyone from class for a final celebration of our progress and success and I look forward to keeping in touch with many of them. Thank you to the people who made it to the opening, it was a great surprise to see you all there.
